For anyone interested a scripture scholar’s view of the role of Peter in the Gospels and Acts, the best book written to date is out-of-print. Raymond Brown’s Peter in the New Testament is an impressive synopsis of his relationship to Jesus. Before some of you get hot under the collar at the mere mention of Raymond Brown, let me say that the “Catholic view” on St. Peter is presented and adequately defended in this book, available on Amazon. Brown edits chapters co-written by other scholars, some Catholic and some Protestant. There is general consensus that Peter is “the spokesperson of the Apostles,” since, whenever the Apostles speak, it is usually Peter who speaks for them. This book is a learned, balanced and highly readable treatment of the role of Peter in Holy Scripture.
